Entry #8: Holiday Commercialism

Hello! I hope you're having a great week. I wasn't too sure about what to write for this blog, but I recently had to write an essay for my high school English class. It was an argumentative essay about how the holidays have become widely commercialized, and there was a debated on weather ads like Black Friday and Cyber Monday have taken the focus away from the holiday spirit. So this blog will be my position in this argument.

Recently the holiday season has been full of ads on the special deals that are in stores, and it has taken it's focus on the true meaning of the holidays. The holidays should be about spending time with those you love and reconnecting with ones family traditions.

The holidays is a time where one can chat and have a laugh with family and friends. Many use this time to catch us with those they haven't seen in a long time. A famously known character of the holiday season once said, "Maybe Christmas[…] doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little more." The people from Whoville then gathered around the the big tree that was in the middle of town, and then began to sing, even though they didn't have any present under the Christmas tree. This just goes to show that the holidays are the best when you're surrounded by those you love most.

During the holiday season, many use this time to also reconnect with their traditions. For example, there are many people who participate in a parade that is led by a silk dragon, which is the Chinese symbol of strength. the ones who participate in the parade carry lanterns throughout and the whole parade. They also throw fireworks, as to keep the dragons awake since it sleeps most of the year, according to the legend. It is thanks to the holiday season that many people can participate in their cultures traditions, so they wont be forgotten.

It can be argued that the deals that are offered during the holidays help people get a present at an affordable price. But to go back to what the Grinch had stated, presents aren't necessary. It may be a great to get a new phone, but it is better to make new memories with your family and friends.

Commercialism has made the holiday season more about materialistic things, when it should mostly be about spending time with those you love and reconnecting with ones traditions.

Well that all for this blog! Please feel free to let me know what your take is on commercialism during the holiday season. Have a great week, and until next time!

  1. Hi Samantha, again very nice images and aesthetic to your blogs always. I'm not a big fan of the holidays though, I agree that the holidays don't feel like they used too even with all the advertisements and pressure to buy things in your face, it really does take away the holiday spirit.

  2. Your blog on holiday commercialization is great, emphasizing the importance of spending time with loved ones and embracing traditions over materialism. I also feel like holidays aren't the same as they once were.

  3. Hi Samantha, I agree with you. I think the holiday is about spending time with those close to you, not just receiving gifts. I think this generation care about themselves more than others. And social media does not help the issues. For some reason I feel more stressed about the holiday than excited. I don't know if its all the Christmas being thorwn around or having to worry about buying gifts.
